Blue Holidays Quilt-Along: Day 1

Walking in a Winter Wonderland...
Sew a wintry lap quilt in gorgeous blue and silver holiday prints!

We'll be spending the next two weeks sharing the Blue Holidays Quilt-Along with you! This cozy lap quilt features our wintry Blue Holidays collection--perfect to use all winter long!

Follow along as we reveal the quilt row by row and make it yourself to snuggle under all winter long. The finished quilt measures 60" x 68" and features five different pieced blocks. 

Today we're sharing the tutorial for Star Block #1. You'll need to make four of these quick and easy blocks (made from half-square triangles!), and we'll talk block row assembly on Day 6. 

Star Block #1

You'll Need:

(to make 4 blocks)

¼ yard blue swirl

¼ yard gray swirl

1/3 yard white filigee

1/3 yard navy ornament

Cutting:

From the Blue Swirl:

(1) 4” x WOF strip; subcut into (2) 4” squares and (2) 3-1/2” squares

From the Gray Swirl:

(1) 4” x WOF strip; subcut into (2) 4” squares and (2) 3-1/2” squares

From the White Filigree:

(2) 4” x WOF strips; subcut into (16) 4” squares

From the Navy Ornament:

(2) 4” x WOF strips; subcut into (16) 4” squares

Make the Blocks:

Step 1 Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side (1) 4” White Filigree square. Pair right sides together with (1) 4” Navy Ornament square.

Step 2 Sew ¼” on both sides of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line. 

Step 3 Press both units open and trim to measure 3-1/2” square.

Step 4 Make a total of (4) White Filigree/Navy Ornament HST units. In the same way, make a total of (2) each White Filigree/Gray Swirl, White Filigree/Blue Swirl, Navy Ornament/Blue Swirl, and Navy Ornament/Gray Swirl HST units as shown.

Step 5 Lay out 12 HST units, (2) 3-1/2” Blue Swirl squares, and (2) 3-1/2” Gray Swirl squares into (4) rows of (4) as shown, noting orientation of each piece.

Step 6 Sew the units/squares into rows and join the rows to complete (1) 12-1/2” square block.
 

Step 7 Repeat steps 1-6 to make a total of (4) blocks.
