Walking in a Winter Wonderland...
Sew a wintry lap quilt in gorgeous blue and silver holiday prints!
As a lead-up to the holidays, we're sharing the Blue Holidays Quilt-Along with you! This cozy lap quilt features our wintry Blue Holidays collection--perfect to use all winter long!
Follow along as we reveal the quilt row by row and make it yourself to snuggle under all winter long. The finished quilt measures 60" x 68" and features five different pieced blocks.
Today we're sharing the tutorial for Star Block #3. This block involves the most pieces of any of the blocks we've done, but it's still easy to sew!
Star Block #3
You’ll Need:
(to make 4 blocks)
3/8 yard White Filigree print
½ yard Navy Ornament print
½ yard Blue Stripe print
Cutting:
From the White Filigree:
(1) 4-1/2” x WOF strips; subcut into (16) 2-1/2” x 4-1/2” pieces
(1) 3” x WOF strip; subcut into (4) 3” squares
From the Navy Ornament:
(1) 3” x WOF strip; subcut into (8) 3” squares
(4) 2-1/2” x WOF strip; subcut into (8) 2-1/2” x 6-1/2” pieces, (8) 2-1/2” x 4-1/2” pieces
and (24) 2-1/2” squares
From the Blue Stripe:
(Directions take directional fabric into account)
(1) 6-1/2” x WOF strip; subcut into (4) 2-1/2” x 6-1/2” pieces and (8) 2-1/2” x 4-1/2” pieces
(1) 3” x WOF strip; subcut into (4) 3” squares
(2) 2-1/2” x WOF strips; subcut into (4) 2-1/2” x 6-1/2” pieces and (24) 2-1/2” squares
Make the Blocks:
Step 1 Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (2) 2-1/2” Navy Ornament squares. Position a marked square right sides together on one end of a 2-1/2” x 6-1/2” Blue Stripe piece with stripes running horizontally and one end of a 2-1/2” x 6-1/2” Blue Stripe piece with stripes running vertically.
Step 2 Sew on the drawn line, trim seam allowance to ¼”, and press corner open. Make (2) of each for a total of (4) units (two with the stripes running in each direction).
Step 3 In the same way, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (4) 2-1/2” Navy Ornament squares. Position a marked square on the end of (4) 2-1/2” x 4-1/2” White Filigree pieces, noting orientation. On each piece, sew on the drawn line, trim seam allowance to ¼”, and press open.
Step 4 Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) 3” White Filigree square. Position it right sides together on (1) 3” Navy Ornament square. Sew ¼” on both sides of the line, cut on the line, and press units open to make (2) half-square triangles (HSTs). Make a total of (4) white/navy HSTs. Trim to measure 2-1/2” square.
Step 5 Lay out (1) HST unit, (1) 2-1/2” Navy Ornament square, and (1) 2-1/2” x 4-1/2” Navy Ornament piece as shown. Sew the pieces together to make a 4-1/2” square corner unit. Make a total of (4) corner units.
Step 6 To make a quarter block unit, lay out (1) corner unit, (1) Blue Stripe unit from Step 2, and (1) White Filigree unit from Step 3 as shown. Sew the White Filigree unit to the corner unit, and then add the Navy Ornament unit to make a quarter block unit. Make a total of (4) quarter block units.
Step 7 Lay out the (4) quarter block units, paying attention to orientation of the Blue Stripe units as shown. Sew the units into rows and join the rows to complete a Blue Stripe Star Block #3. Make a second block.
Note: The following steps will guide you through making two additional star blocks. The steps are the same as above, but we’ve provided detailed directions and images for this second version because of the directional stripe used.
Step 8 Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (2) 2-1/2” Blue Stripe squares, noting orientation of both the stripe and the line. Position the marked squares on (2) 2-1/2” x 6-1/2” Navy Ornament pieces.
Step 9 Sew on the drawn line, trim seam allowance to ¼”, and press open. Make (2) in each direction. Your units should look like this.
Step 10 In the same way, mark 2-1/2” Blue Stripe squares as shown and position on (2) 2-1/2” x 4-1/2” White Filigree units (2 with the stripe running vertically, and 2 running horizontally).
Step 11 Sew on the drawn line, trim seam allowance to ¼”, and press open. Make (2) in each direction. Your units should look like this.
Step 12 Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (1) 3” Blue Stripe square with stripes running vertically. Position it right sides together on (1) 3” Navy Ornament square. Sew ¼” on both sides of the line, cut on the line, and press units open to make (2) half-square triangles (HSTs). Make (2). Make an additional (2) HSTs with the Blue Stripe square stripes running horizontally before marking the line. Trim to measure 2-1/2” square.
Step 13 Lay out (1) HST (note the direction), (1) 2-1/2” Blue Stripe square, and (1) 2-1/2” x 4-1/2” Blue Stripe piece as shown. Sew the pieces together to make corner unit A.
Step 13 In the same way, lay out (1) HST (note the direction), (1) 2-1/2” Blue Stripe square, and (1) 2-1/2” x 4-1/2” Blue Stripe piece as shown. Sew the pieces together to make corner unit B.
Step 14 Lay out (1) corner unit A, (1) Navy Ornament unit from step 9, and (1) White Filigree unit from step 10. Make sure the stripes are running horizontally in all pieces. Sew the White Filigree unit to the left side and add the Navy Ornament unit to the bottom. Make (2) A quarter block units.
Step 15 In the same way, lay out (1) corner unit B, (1) Navy Ornament unit from step 9, and (1) White Filigree unit from step 10. Make sure the stripes are running horizontally in all pieces. Sew the White Filigree unit to the bottom and add the Navy Ornament unit to the right side. Make (2) B quarter block units.
Step 16 Lay out the quarter blocks into (2) rows of (2) as shown. Sew the units into rows and join the rows to complete a Navy Ornament Star Block #3. Make (2).
