Modern Fun with Abstract Collage
Share
If you've been following our Instagram feed lately, you've seen projects made with a bright new collection, Abstract Collage by Ampersand Design Studio. We asked these Kansas City-based designers to walk us through their fabric line.
What inspired you to create Abstract Collage?
We were inspired by bold, abstract shapes and interesting line work in the modern art world! The creation of the lead pattern then inspired various complimentary pieces that would serve as accents, trim pieces or help the main pattern come to life!
How did you name the collection?
The name Abstract Collage came from how we created the lead pattern by collaging pieces of cut paper and textures together to create a pattern! There are no icons or specific subject matter at all in this group; it's pure shapes, line work and texture, hence the word "abstract."
How did you choose the palettes for the two color ways?
As we were playing with colors, we realized how this collection can completely transform itself by simply changing up the colors! The bright version is full of bold, statement-making textiles while the muted version feels soft, casual and laid-back. We fell in love with how each version gave us completely different project ideas so we are thrilled that both the brights and the muted came to life!
Do you have a favorite print in the collection?
If we had to pick a favorite, we'd probably have to say the lead pattern, but we feel like it's the strongest when paired with some of the others!
Can you talk about some of the other prints?
We love the energy in the linework in the various forms of these patterns! They have so much movement yet since they are all just two colors, they can serve as a neutral!
The rectangles patterns and bumps in the road patterns (two of these: 120-209171 and two of these120-209192) serve as second lead patterns in our minds because they feature just about every color in the collection and can really tie a quilt together or stand along as a darling skirt or top!
Then of course, all the crosshatch patterns just add a little texture to a place that otherwise might be a solid!
How do you see quilters using this collection?
We are lucky enough to have already witnessed a couple of quilts come to life! The quilts using the bright palette serve as a really modern, bold pop in a living room or older kid's room! The muted collection is so perfectly sweet for a baby quilt or a more subdued home palette! We hope everyone checks out the Pivot Quilt by ModernHandcraft featured here!
Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?
Together, Morgan Georgie & Carrie Kiefer, make up the wildly fun Kansas City-based art and design partnership, Ampersand Design Studio. Carrie & Morgan’s combined style is modern, artful and always colorful! It’s life in the Midwest, their kids’ imaginations and their own long-time friendship that inspire Ampersand’s unique designs.
